The 40-year-old skipped both of his previously scheduled press conferences to visit with medical staff, but plans to speak Friday. According to multiple reports, he “should be OK” for the AFC Championship game Sunday.

During his Friday morning press conference, Belichick was asked the following questions involving Brady:

Do you have an update on Tom Brady’s status for Sunday?

Yeah, we gave out the injury report yesterday. We’ll update it today.

When Brian Hoyer steps in at practice, as he did yesterday, how does that affect the team’s preparation for the execution that you’re looking for on game day? Do you feel like when he’s in there you’re getting the work that helps you meet that team execution?

Brian does a great job for us – works hard, practices hard. He does a good job.

Has not having Tom on the practice field limited your preparation at all for Jacksonville?

We’re going to continue to get ready for Jacksonville all the way through, up till game time.

Now that Brady is dealing with this injury, do you have any regrets about trading Jimmy Garoppolo?

We’re getting ready for Jacksonville.

Does it look like Brady’s playing status might be a game-time decision?

Today’s Friday.

Given Brady’s injury, did you consider bringing in a third quarterback just in case?

Yeah, we’re going to get ready for Jacksonville, do the best that we can, make the best decisions we can for the team to do that, so that’s what we’re going to do.

How much, if at all, does Brady’s status complicate the game planning process for you at this point?

I don’t know.

What is your level of concern that he’ll be able to perform the functions that he needs to at quarterback?

Yeah, I don’t know. We’ll see.

You said after you traded Garoppolo that you had one of the best quarterback situations in the league for the past several years. What are your thoughts on the quarterback situation now with Brian Hoyer?

Yeah, right now, my thoughts are getting ready for Jacksonville. So, we’re going to do the best we can to put the most competitive team out there and play the best and coach the best that we can on Sunday.

Have you had a good week of preparation so far, or do you still have a ways to go before you’re ready for Sunday?

Yeah, we’re over two days away. We have a long way to go.

As information trickles out regarding the hand injury Patriots quarterback Tom Brady suffered in Wednesday’s practice, it appears he most likely injured a finger on his throwing hand rather than the hand itself.

Likely, he jammed his hand badly enough to have an open finger dislocation.

It is difficult to suffer a true laceration on a handoff, especially in practice. Also, if it were just a cut, there would be no need for X-ray.

The main possibility requiring a X-ray that could also cause a cut is an open finger dislocation.

In that case, the displaced finger joint would be so far out of place that it would tear the skin from the inside out.

The reference to 24 hours probably refers to the possibility of infection.

An open dislocation of the PIP (proximal interphalageal joint, the middle joint on the finger) is most common. This injury most frequently happens to the pinky or ring finger, which would be the least troublesome for a quarterback. The thumb would be most devastating in terms of the ability grip the ball and spin it on passes.

Finger dislocations through the skin happen to many players with relatively minimal effect. Texans defensive end J.J. Watt suffered an open dislocation in the season opener and returned to play in that game.

That this is the throwing hand of a quarterback is the worrisome issue. But as long as it is not the thumb, the effect should be mitigated.

Even with torn ligaments, which happens in every dislocation, the pinky would be fine with tape and support.

The pain will dissipate by game time and medication could dull pain. The function on the finger should be good, as the tendons that control function typically are not damaged

If it is the thumb, this will be a big deal in terms of affecting Brady’s grip and throwing. (The index finger is second-most important, followed by the middle finger.)

All eyes will be on Brady’s right hand at Thursday’s practice – if he takes the field Thursday. The key will be which finger and what location is bandaged.

If he does practice, he may wear a glove to not only help with grip, as we suggested in our initial report Wednesday, but to hide which finger is injured.

If he doesn’t practice, he could skip a press conference where all eyes would again be on any bandages on his hand/finger.

Tom Brady didn’t offer an update on his injured thumb, wearing gloves during his media session Friday. Bill Belichick didn’t have anything to say either. Nor did any of the Patriots.

Not much information has leaked out of the building.

But Tom Curran of NBC Sports Boston has added details he’s hearing to what Mike Felger of WBZ in Boston reported earlier Friday. Felger said Brady needed four stitches. Curran indicates the injury is worse than just a bad cut.

“Brady’s right thumb bent back badly,” according to Curran, when a running back ran into the quarterback. The ball jammed into the webbing between Brady’s thumb and index finger, causing a cut.

Brady left practice Wednesday for an X-ray that showed no structural damage. He didn’t practice Thursday and returned Friday, but Brady did not take snaps under center, per Curran.

The Patriots are limiting Brady’s reps to keep him from aggravating the injury. Curran said Brady can throw, but adds, “I have no idea how hard, how far or how accurately.”

The team lists Brady as questionable on the injury report, and he could take a shot of Toradol to help with the pain from the injury.
