Jaguars

Jaguars GM Dave Caldwell recently told the Florida Times Union that he plans to "build around" Blaine Gabbert as Jacksonville's 2013 starter.
Caldwell noted that Gabbert, 23, is "the second-youngest quarterback in the NFL," and he anticipates a third-year leap. (Caldwell is more optimistic than we are.) "What were they saying about other quarterbacks after their second year?" Caldwell asked rhetorically. "We’re looking for improvement (in year three). We need to build around him. We’ll upgrade whenever we can upgrade." Added new coach Gus Bradley, "(Gabbert) has been very impressive so far in our conversations."

The Rams interviewed Vikings assistant Mike Singletary for their defensive coordinator vacancy this week.
Singletary landed the title of "special assistant to the head coach" and linebackers coach with ex-Bears teammate Leslie Frazier after flaming out as the 49ers' head coach. He's overseen Chad Greenway, Erin Henderson, and Jasper Brinkley's development over the past two seasons. The Rams are in the market for a defensive coordinator after agreeing mutually to part ways with Rob Ryan.

Jared Odrick - DL - Dolphins

Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald suggests that the Dolphins might place RE Jared Odrick on the trade block.
Odrick was drafted to play "five technique" in a 3-4 defense. The Dolphins are a 4-3 now, and Odrick lacks explosive ability requisite for 4-3 defensive ends. "He's not a fit for the scheme," Salguero writes. Odrick has cheap base salaries through 2014, is only 25 years old, and possesses an ideal skill set for the 3-4. He could likely bring back a second-day draft pick via trade.

Muhammad Wilkerson - DL - Jets

Jets RE Muhammad Wilkerson's 2012 campaign was the most productive season by a Jets defensive lineman in Rex Ryan's head-coaching tenure.
Wilkerson amassed 70 tackles, three forced fumbles, and five sacks while grading out as Pro Football Focus' No. 2 3-4 defensive end in the entire league, behind only J.J. Watt. He was still snubbed for Pro Bowl recognition. Wilkerson, still just 23, is one of the Jets' few building blocks on either side of the ball.

Cliff Avril - DL - Lions

Lions GM Martin Mayhew agrees that free agent Cliff Avril is capable of fitting any defensive scheme.
Some 4-3 ends can't play in a 3-4. Some 3-4 linebackers can't play in a 4-3. But Avril is "scheme versatile," and that's going to pay dividends on the open market because everyone will want him. "He's a very good athlete," Mayhew said. "He could probably stand up, he could play right end, he could play left end. He could do a lot of different things, I think. He's a very talented guy, and I think he's got a lot of versatility."

Saints Defense - TM - Saints

Georgia defensive coordinator Todd Grantham has withdrawn his name from the Saints' defensive coordinator search.
Grantham was an apparent finalist along with ex-Cowboys defensive coordinator Rob Ryan. Profootballtalk.com reported this week that a Saints deal with Ryan is "basically done," signaling that Grantham will stay in the college ranks.

Louis Delmas - DB - Lions

The Detroit News expects the Lions to "make a push" to re-sign free agent safeties Louis Delmas and Amari Spievey.
Both players were racked by injury in 2012, but represent familiar, veteran options for a secondary that was in total disarray last season. Spievey is a restricted free agent, and won't be a complicated case if the Lions are serious about keeping him. Limited to 19 total games the past two seasons, Delmas will be a tougher negotiation. In theory, he's a viable candidate for the franchise tag, but GM Martin Mayhew has said he has "no plans" to use the tag.

Five potential landing spots for Percy Harvin
By Dan Hanzus
Around the League Writer

We told you earlier Sunday of a report that the Minnesota Vikings will attempt to trade star wide receiver Percy Harvin, who might have used up the reserve tank of his team's patience.

It remains to be seen if Harvin is truly on the block, but let's take a moment to list five teams who could serve as a logical landing spot for the playmaker.

1. New England Patriots: With both Wes Welker and Brandon Lloyd potentially moving on, the Patriots could be on track for a facelift at wide receiver. Bill Belichick is reportedly a big admirer of Harvin, and Harvin certainly has the type of versatility that Belichick covets. The Patriots aren't known to shell out big money for wideouts, but that doesn't mean they won't.

2. San Francisco 49ers: Michael Crabtree's emergence was a huge lift for Jim Harbaugh, but the Niners are still looking for consistency at wide receiver. Mario Manningham and Kyle Williams are coming off serious knee injuries and Randy Moss is unlikely to return. The Niners don't have a ton of cap room to play with, but they could get creative to land a player who could serve as the final piece of the puzzle.

3. Miami Dolphins: Ryan Tannehill certainly deserves a better class of wide receiver, and general manager Jeff Ireland made it clear last month he will aggressively search the market for playmakers to put around his young quarterback. Harvin would instantly slide in as the Dolphins' No. 1 wideout and they should have the funds to get an extension done. The team's decision on free agent left tackle Jake Long will play a role here.

4. Jacksonville Jaguars: Shad Khan is intent on bringing excitement to the NFL's most moribund franchise, and Harvin is on the short list of the game's most electric talents. Given the Jaguars' dearth of talent -- and the team's wavering faith in Blaine Gabbert -- it makes complete sense for new general manager Dave Caldwell to kick the tires on Harvin. If Justin Blackmon puts it together, that's a mean 1-2.

5. Cleveland Browns: The good people of Cleveland deserve a dynamic star they can call their own. Seriously, can you name one since the Browns came back into the league in 1999? The Browns should have ample cap space to extend Harvin, who would team with Josh Gordon and Greg Little to form a rock-solid group of young wideouts. Throw Trent Richardson into that mix at running back, and the Browns -- at long last -- might be onto something.

Green Bay Packers tight end Jermichael Finley told the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel he believes it's a "50/50" chance that he remains with the club next season.

The Packers have a decision to make about the talented Finley, who is due a $3 million roster bonus in March. If the Packers trade or release Finley, they would save $8.25 million.
