As the Super Bowl champions, the Ravens will be the home team for the NFL’s Thursday night opener on September 5, and the good news for the NFL (and NBC) is that the Ravens have a very good slate of home opponents in 2013, from a TV ratings perspective.

The Ravens’ home opponents in 2013 are the Bengals, Browns, Steelers, Patriots, Jets, Texans, Packers and Vikings. Of those, only the Browns can be eliminated: There’s no way the league will put Cleveland in the marquee Week One opener.

(Well, if we want to get crazy, we’ll point out one scenario in which the opener could be Browns-Ravens: If the Ravens put the non-exclusive franchise tag on Joe Flacco, and the Browns sign him away, then Browns at Ravens would suddenly become the marquee game of the entire season. But it’s probably safe to say that won’t happen.)

Aside from the Browns, every other potential Week One matchup in Baltimore would be a good game: The Bengals, Patriots, Texans, Packers and Vikings were all playoff teams, the Steelers-Ravens rivalry has long been one of the NFL’s best, and even though the Jets were a circus last year, they were a circus that plenty of people watched.

So who will the Ravens’ Week One opponent be? Only once since the NFL began playing the opening game in the Super Bowl champion’s city has there been an interconference game, and it probably won’t happen again this year: FOX only gets the Ravens twice and would surely fight to keep Vikings-Ravens or Packers-Ravens from moving over to NBC. Considering that the last three Week One opening night games have been NFC matchups that otherwise would have been on FOX, the NFL will probably decide that it’s time to take an AFC game from CBS.

Of the AFC games, one stands out as the best of the bunch: Patriots-Ravens, a rematch of the last two AFC Championship Games. The Patriots and the Ravens have developed a great rivalry in recent years, and they’ve played some excellent games that have drawn huge TV ratings. The Ravens have a great slate of home games in 2013, but none is better than the Patriots game, and that’s probably the one we’ll all be watching on the first Thursday night in September.

LaRon Landry - DB - Jets

ESPN New York characterizes the Jets' chances of re-signing free agent SS LaRon Landry as "remote."
Per a clause in Landry's contract, he cannot be franchise tagged. Although there's disagreement over how dire the Jets' cap situation truly is, there's almost no chance they'd be able to win a bidding war if Landry reaches the open market. Players who can't be franchise tagged reach free agency almost 100 percent of the time.

Anthony Spencer - LB - Cowboys

DallasCowboys.com doesn't expect the Cowboys to re-sign free agent OLB/DE Anthony Spencer.
Writer Nick Eatman expects Spencer to reach the open market and pull down a deal worth $10-$12 million per season. Even the $8.8 million Spencer played for last season would be prohibitive for a team that's believed to be as much as $20 millon over the 2013 salary cap. Spencer is reportedly "hopeful a deal can be worked out," but it's unlikely.

Aaron Rodgers - QB - Packers

Aaron Rodgers said he is in no rush to sign a contract extension.
Rodgers signed a six-year, $65 million deal in October of 2008. By today's standards, he's nothing short of a bargain. Drew Brees' annual contract averages $20 million per season, Peyton Manning will earn $20 million in 2013 and Joe Flacco is getting set to break the bank. "I think everybody is going to see what Joe ends up signing for," Rodgers said. We wouldn't be surprised to see Rodgers eventually become the game's highest paid player.

The New York Giants released starting running back Ahmad Bradshaw on Wednesday, a source with knowledge of the Giants' moves told NFL.com's Ian Rapoport. The team also released defensive end Chris Canty, a source who has spoken with the player told NFL.com's Albert Breer.

The move was somewhat expected since Bradshaw had seen his playing time cut in 2012 to fellow running backs David Wilson and Andre Brown. The source told Rapoport that Bradshaw is expected to be ready for offseason workouts after having surgery on his foot last month.

Bradshaw rushed for 4,232 yards and 32 touchdowns in six seasons with the Giants.

Canty recorded 20 tackles and three sacks in 2012 as the Giants failed to make the playoffs one season after winning the franchise's fourth Super Bowl title.

Bradshaw and Canty's exits come one day after the Giants released veteran linebacker Michael Boley.

Eric Wright - DB - Buccaneers

The Tampa Bay Times says the Bucs are expected to release CB Eric Wright.
Wright signed a "five-year, $38 million" contract last offseason, but his four-game PEDs suspension voided all of his remaining guaranteed money. Wright is due $7.75 million in 2013, but he won't see that after being a contributor to one of the worst secondaries in the NFL in 2012. The Bucs will certainly be on the lookout for corners in both free agency and the draft.

D.J. Williams - LB - Broncos

The Denver Post expects the Broncos to either release LB D.J. Williams or request a "significant pay cut."
Williams was suspended for nine games in 2012, and made just one start in seven contests upon returning. He played only 131 regular season snaps. He's currently due an untenable $6 million in 2013.

Michael Vick - QB - Eagles

The Eagles are eligible to carry over a league-high $23 million from 2012 onto their 2013 salary cap.
In other words, cap space won't be the issue if Philly releases Michael Vick. The 2011 Collective Bargaining Agreement stipulates that NFL teams can carry unused salary cap space into the following year. The Eagles saved up more than anyone, and the Jaguars have the second most carry-over-able money at $21.1 million. The 2013 NFL salary cap is expected to be roughly $121 million.

Quarterbacks

Michael Vick, Eagles ($15.5 million):
He won't be making that kind of money, but something around $10
million isn't out of the question. The Eagles want to keep him at
the right price, and I'd expect the Jaguars, Cardinals and Browns
to also have interest if he hits the market or is trade bait.
Carson Palmer, Raiders ($13 million base salary):
There is no way Oakland is going to pay him that kind of money to
stay, sources said, and Palmer will have to decide how much cash
he's willing to walk away from to stay.
Kevin Kolb, Cardinals ($9 million salary, plus $2 million roster bonus):
He won't make that kind of money to stay, and I can't imagine
Kolb getting the roster bonus, though if he's willing to settle
for more like $5 million there could still be an opportunity for him in
Arizona.
Alex Smith, 49ers ($7.5 million base salary plus $1 million roster bonus):
The 49ers are talking tough about keeping him, but no one is
buying that. He deserves a chance to start somewhere and will get
that whether via trade -- most likely -- or by being cut before his
roster bonus is due next month. Kansas City could be a landing spot.

Matt Cassel, Chiefs ($7.5 million):
League sources said there is almost no chance he remains in
Kansas City. The fans have turned on him, and it's time for a
change.
Matt Hasselbeck, Titans ($5.5 million):
He has been a great mentor to Jake Locker, but now it's time for
the kid to sink or swim, and the Titans need to invest in weapons
around him. With so many teams needy at quarterback, Hasselbeck
could get a starting opportunity elsewhere if he is released.
Matt Flynn, Seahawks ($5.25 million): The Seahawks want to deal him, and the Jets are one possibility.
