As the NFL combine and NFL draft near, it’s become apparent the quarterback class isn’t very strong.

Speaking on a national conference call on Monday, NFL Network draft expert Mike Mayock said Jimmy Garoppolo is likely better than any of the players coming out of the draft, which means a team in need of a quarterback should likely try and swing a trade with the Patriots rather than select one high in the draft.

One of those teams is the Browns, who have five picks in the first three rounds. One of the scenarios that has been mentioned is the Browns trading the Patriots the No. 12 overall pick considering they also have the first overall pick.

Mayock would be on board if the Browns were to do that.

“In my opinion, if I’m the Cleveland Browns and I’ve got No. 1 and No. 12, if I came away with either [defensive end Myles] Garrett or [defensive tackle] Jonathan Allen at No. 1, and gave up the 12th pick in the draft to get Garoppolo? I would be stoked,” he said. “I would feel like I had a difference-maker on defense and we had a quarterback on offense. Now let’s get to work. We got five in the first 65 picks. Let’s get to work.

“From my perspective, especially looking at the quarterbacks this year, if they gave up No. 12 and could get Garoppolo, I’d be all over that.”

The Browns won’t be the only team interested, but with all their draft picks they are in the best position to swing a potential deal with the Patriots.

The Vikings are moving on without Adrian Peterson.

Minnesota announced Tuesday that it will not exercise the 2017 option on Peterson's contract. The running back was due $18 million, but will now become an unrestricted free agent on March 9.

"Adrian is an important part of the Minnesota Vikings organization," said Vikings general manager Rick Spielman in a statement released by the team. "We will continue to have conversations with his representatives and leave our future options open while determining what is best for both parties moving forward."

Jason Pierre-Paul - DL - Giants

Giants used the non-exclusive franchise tag on DE Jason Pierre-Paul.
It is a somewhat surprising decision considering the non-exclusive tag costs the same as the exclusive tag, although the exclusive tag's price could climb over the next couple weeks. The non-exclusive designation means Pierre-Paul will be free to negotiate with other teams, but the Giants will be able to match if he signs an offer sheet. If they decline to match, they will be entitled to two first-round picks. That hefty cost means the Giants likely have nothing to worry about, but the decision is still puzzling.

Alshon Jeffery - WR - Bears

Speaking on Good Morning Football, NFL Network's Mike Garafolo said the Titans will "make a push to bring in some receiver help."
He added Tennessee will be "very active this offseason" and are "prepared to spend." The comments came up in a discussion about Alshon Jeffery, who is certain to land a monster deal as the best receiver available in free agency. If the Titans balk at Jeffery's asking price, they could turn to the draft to find a true No. 1 receiver. Clemson's Mike Williams, Western Michigan's Corey Davis, and Washington's John Ross are all first-round prospects.

Adrian Peterson - RB - Vikings

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports Cowboys owner Jerry Jones "would pursue" Adrian Peterson if he's still available by the March 9 start of free agency.
The Vikings may end up keeping Peterson on a restructured deal, but at present he is scheduled to hit the market on March 9. Per RapSheet, Jones would like to "pair" Peterson with Ezekiel Elliott in a tandem backfield. Jones doesn't call the shots in Dallas to the extent he used to, however, and the Cowboys have much bigger needs on defense and at wide receiver. The idea of Peterson in Dallas will generate internet clicks, but we'd bet heavily it doesn't happen.

Redskins slap Kirk Cousins with exclusive tag

Redskins assigned the exclusive-rights franchise tag to QB Kirk Cousins.
The exclusive tag guarantees Cousins a 20-percent raise on his 2016 salary of $19.953 million and prohibits teams from negotiating with him. The Redskins could still theoretically trade Cousins, but negotiations would have to go through Washington's front office and not Cousins' agents, making a trade unlikely. Cousins has flourished in Jay Gruden's offense, improving immensely as a decision maker and precision passer. He has completed at least 67 percent of his passes in consecutive years, posting a 54:23 TD-to-INT ratio during that span. Cousins turns 29 in August. It remains unclear whether the Redskins have interest in signing Cousins to a long-term deal.

According to the Washington Post's Mark Maske, a trade sending Redskins franchise player Kirk Cousins to San Francisco "remains in play" despite Cousins' exclusive-rights tag.
While the exclusive tag prevents teams from approaching Cousins and his agents personally, teams can still approach the Redskins' front office about Cousins' trade availability. It would be surprising if the quarterback-desperate, Kyle Shanahan-coached 49ers did not do so. Washington's asking price should still be enormous, likely involving the Niners' No. 2 overall pick. San Francisco is presently armed with ten picks, including seven in the first five rounds.

Jamaal Charles - RB - Free Agent

Chiefs released RB Jamaal Charles.
The fully-expected move saves Kansas City $6.2 million in salary cap space. 30-year-old Charles struggled to get on the field in 2016 while battling injuries to both knees following a 2016 ACL tear. He has just 83 carries since the end of the 2014 season. One of the NFL's most dynamic all-purpose backs during his prime, Charles incredibly hit or topped 5.0 yards per carry in each of his first eight NFL seasons. A team will likely bring Charles to camp to give him a look, but his NFL future is in serious doubt.

Russell Okung - T - Free Agent

ESPN 710 Seattle's Danny O'Neil reports free agent LT Russell Okung would "consider a return" to the Seahawks.
Okung, coming off another mediocre year, supposedly has "no shortage of teams inquiring." A return to Seattle would make a ton of sense on paper, as the sides are intimately familiar, and the 'Hawks fielded a laughable line in 2016.

Darrelle Revis - DB - Free Agent
Jets released CB Darrelle Revis.
Signed to a "five-year, $70 million" contract in March 2015, Revis returned to New York as a conquering hero, and turned in a solid 2015. Things have been very Jets-y since, with Revis' play falling off a cliff last season before a February arrest on felony assault charges. The move creates $7.33 million in cap space, but leaves behind a whopping $8 million in dead money. With his legs seemingly toast, the former fiercest corner in the league might have to convert to safety in his age-32 season. That's if he doesn't retire.
