Did the Jets contact Darrelle Revis or his representatives before Tuesday afternoon, when the league year officially began and he officially became a free agent?

That's a question the NFL is looking into at the moment, according to Bleacher Report's Jason Cole. The league has sent investigators to the offices of several teams, Cole said, including the Jets.

Though it had been reported long before the official start of free agency that the Patriots planned not to pick up the option to keep Revis for 2015 -- an option that would have paid Revis $20 million and counted $25 million against the cap -- Revis did not officially become a free agent until Tuesday afternoon at 4 p.m.

Had the Jets spoken to Revis or his representatives at any point before the official start of free agency, that would qualify as tampering. (The league's instituted legal-tampering period, when teams can contact players who are scheduled to become free agents but not make official offers, did not have any effect on Revis because his option year meant he was a member of the Patriots roster until his option was officially declined.)

The Patriots already filed tampering charges against the Jets earlier this year after Jets owner Woody Johnson said during a press conference that he would "love" to have Revis back in New York.
