"He had a broken back last year," in-house writer Mike O’Hara said on a podcast. "Broken bones in his back."

S Glover Quin is retiring after 10 seasons in the NFL.

Released by the Lions in February, it always seemed likely the 33-year-old would call it quits. Quin played four seasons with the Texans, who selected him in the fourth round of the 2009 NFL Draft, but he had his best years in Detroit including a seven-interception season in 2014. He made his only Pro Bowl that year. Quin retires with 740 tackles, 24 interceptions, and two defensive touchdowns.

Veteran safety Glover Quin announced his retirement last week, but he doesn’t need to find another job if he doesn’t want to.

Quin told Peter King for this week’s Football Morning in America that he has saved 70 percent of his after-tax income. Quin made about $33 million in his NFL career, so even living on 30 percent of his income, he was more comfortable than most, but he didn’t throw money away on the kinds of things that cause some professional athletes to go broke.

“That was all a part of the plan,” Quin said. “I never had a Bentley. I never had a Maserati. My wife and I lived well. We just didn’t live extravagantly. My attitude was, if you sacrifice a little bit in your twenties, you can live great for the rest of your life. And by doing that, I could walk away without thinking right now, ‘I gotta play one more year because I really need that extra $2 million.’”

The Lions made Trey Flowers the centerpiece of their offseason, signing the former Patriots outside linebacker to a five-year, $90 million contract.

He won’t be ready for the start of training camp, as the team announced he was on the active/physically unable to perform list.

Players can be activated from PUP list at any time.

Flowers had what was termed a minor shoulder procedure after the Super Bowl, but there was no indication it would be a long-term issue.

The Lions also announced a number of roster moves, including the addition of tight end Austin Traylor. He played in the AAF, and was on the Broncos practice squad and active roster in 2017. He also spent time with the Cowboys, Chargers, Patriots and Ravens in 2016.

They activated four players from the active/non-football injury list: Defensive tackle John Atkins, defensive end Austin Bryant, defensive tackle P.J. Johnson, and tackle Ryan Pope. They also activated wide receiver Chris Lacy from the active-PUP list, and placed linebacker Steve Longa on the PUP.

Lions signed DL Mike Daniels to a one-year, $9.1 million contract.

In a surprise move, one of the most productive receiving backs in the NFL has been released.
It’s unclear why the Lions are cutting Riddick, who is the only running back in the NFL with at least 300 receiving yards in each of the last five seasons.
