Much like the Buccaneers in their futile attempt to move Darrelle Revis and his contract, the Panthers have been dragging their heels on Steve Smith, praying someone would trade for him.

They’ve apparently realized that’s not happening.

According to Bill Voth of SportsXchange, the Panthers will release Smith today, ending his 13-year career with the team.

Smith has already indicated on his Twitter feed that he intends to keep playing, which will make for a fascinating choice.

His wife is pregnant with their fourth child and he’s settled in Charlotte, so he doesn’t want to go far. And while he’s matured, he has enough spite left in him that sticking it to the Panthers after a graceless exit is something that might appeal to him.

That makes Tampa Bay (where his close friend Josh McCown just signed) a possibility, though he’ll have several options.

Teams may not be buying the same game-breaking player he once was. But they’re getting one that’s highly motivated to prove a point.

Just as Panthers General Manager Dave Gettleman apparently was.

When it became likely that linebacker LaMarr Woodley would be released by the Steelers, one of the teams that came to mind as a landing spot was the Titans.

Tennessee could use help with their pass rush and their defensive coordinator Ray Horton was on the Steelers’ defensive staff during Woodley’s first four NFL seasons. It seems that there may be some fire behind that smoke.

Terry McCormick of Titans Insider reports that Woodley is headed to Nashville to visit with the Titans on Thursday. Woodley’s coming off a pair of underwhelming seasons that resulted in nine total sacks and a run of injuries that kept him off the field for eight games, but the Titans’ need for help off the edge may have them hoping a healthy Woodley can get back to his old tricks.

Woodley hasn’t mentioned anything on his Twitter account about a visit. The last tweet is from Wednesday when Woodley was on his way to meet with the Raiders, a meeting that Vic Tafur of the San Francisco Chronicle reports included a dinner with the team and fellow free agent Justin Tuck. Tafur also wrote that “things are moving nicely in right direction” with both players, but if Woodley does make it to Tennessee it would suggest he’s still very much in play.
