Is Nick Foles ahead of Michael Vick in Eagles QB race?
by Dave Richard | Senior Fantasy Writer

Nick Foles has a better chance to start for the Eagles than Michael Vick does. That's the opinion of Eagles beat writer Geoff Mosher of Comcast Sportsnet, who believes Vick has given up his lead in the race through the offseason workouts when both quarterbacks split reps 50-50.

Mosher also notes that the Eagles' willingness to draft rookie quarterback Matt Barkley proved that they're not necessarily looking for a quarterback with mobility to run the offense. Instead, they want a passer who can make quick, timely decisions and throw with accuracy, qualities Vick hasn't always had. Their salaries -- Vick makes the most of any Eagles quarterback -- is a factor, too.

Vick, Foles and Barkley will continue their battle when training camp opens in late July.

Donald Brown, Delone Carter on roster bubble?
by Dave Richard | Senior Fantasy Writer

With Ahmad Bradshaw joining Vick Ballard in the Indianapolis backfield, ESPN believes Donald Brown and Delone Carter are vying for one roster spot in training camp and preseason this summer. This is in part because Colts rookie Kerwynn Williams should land a job with the team coming out of the preseason.

Browns to carry two kickers?
by Dave Richard | Senior Fantasy Writer

The Browns might wind up carrying two kickers this season: veteran Shayne Graham for field goals and rookie Brandon Bogotay for kickoffs. Bogotay was a kickoff specialist in college, attempting only three field goals. Graham has been kicking field goals for NFL teams since 2001.

Coach Rob Chudzinski alluded to a kicking competition between the two, something that might last into the preseason, according to ESPN

Danny Amendola to be Tom Brady's 'go-to guy'?
by Dave Richard | Senior Fantasy Writer

Could Danny Amendola become Tom Brady's primary receiver this season for the Patriots? According to Paul Perillo with Patriots Football Weekly, the answer is yes.

Responding to a question from a fan asking who Brady's top target will be, Perillo considered Amendola to be the "go-to guy as long as Rob Gronkowski is out dealing with his back injury." The other receivers, per Perillo, are complementary pieces.

Could Shane Vereen be the Patriots' new offensive star?
by Dave Richard | Senior Fantasy Writer

With the Patriots offense in a state of flux this offseason, there are questions about whose playing time will increase now that Aaron Hernandez is no longer on the team.

ESPN's Field Yates, a former Patriots intern, suggests Shane Vereen could see the biggest bump in playing time as a versatile weapon who could line up all over the field and contribute as a rusher and as a receiver. Vereen played sparingly as a receiver last year but did have some good plays when he wasn't used as a traditional running back.

Yates even went on to hint the Pats could use Vereen much like the Vikings used Percy Harvin and the Packers used Randall Cobb

It appears that Carlos Ortiz has flipped on Aaron Hernandez. It’s apparently unlikely that Ernest Wallace will.

Buried in a story regarding a supposed “mix-up” regarding whether Wallace will be represented by the public defender or a private lawyer is the likely reason for Bristol County District Attorney Sam Sutter’s frustration: If Wallace has a high-profile defense lawyer representing him, someone is paying for it.

That someone could be Hernandez.

If so, it means that Wallace most likely will decline to play ball with prosecutors, opting to help circle the wagons with Hernandez. It also likely means that prosecutors won’t have Wallace to corroborate the testimony of Ortiz, who undoubtedly will be painted as an unreliable malcontent whose story can’t be trusted.

In the end, it may not matter, given the strong circumstantial evidence already linking Hernandez to the killing of Odin Lloyd. But it would be a lot easier to prove all elements of the case beyond a reasonable doubt if Wallace were willing to cooperate.

For now, Sutter is venting by complaining about the short-term waste of public defender resources.

“I’m very concerned about this,” Sutter said, via the Boston Herald. ”This has happened before to other district attorneys and it’s not going to stop until the courts or the Legislature puts a stop to it. It certainly is an issue of taxpayer money, and it’s also an issue of inappropriately impeding homicide investigations.”

The Herald item leaves hanging the question of whether attorney David Meier’s bill is being footed by someone else. Technically, the question of whether Hernandez or anyone else is paying Meier to represent Wallace shouldn’t matter.

Still, if Hernandez is paying for Wallace’s lawyer, it means there’s an understanding that the two men are going to stick together in their common defense. And that’s likely the real reason why Sutter is upset.

It’s fitting, we suppose, that a man who will support any given NFL team at any given time will support any given player at any given time.

Or, more specifically, Aaron Hernandez when he stands accused of first-degree murder.

Via NESN, Snoop Dogg has expressed support for Hernandez on Instagram: ”Keep ya head up!! We prayn for ya.”

Snoop Dogg can relate. In the 1990s, he faced a trial on murder charges. Acquitted of first-degree and second-degree murder, the jury couldn’t reach a verdict on the question of whether Snoop Dogg and his bodyguard committed voluntary manslaughter.

Despite Snoop Dogg’s history and notoriously open use of marijuana, the NFL has periodically legitimized Snoop Dogg, putting him on NFL Network multiple times. Also, the league-owned website sometimes broadcasts Snoop Dogg’s views and opinions.

It’s an odd marriage, made even more bizarre by Snoop Dogg’s open support for Hernandez at a time when the NFL essentially has ostracized him.

Regardless of whether Aaron Hernandez failed one drug test or six drug tests or something in between during his time at Florida, Hernandez reportedly failed no drug tests during his NFL career.

According to Ben Volin of the Boston Globe, zero is the magic number as it relates to the number of times Hernandez tested positive for recreational drugs.

It’s important to understand what that does, and doesn’t, mean. For players not in the substance-abuse program, testing happens once per year — between April 20 and August 9. After that test, the player isn’t tested again until the next stretch from April 20 through August 9.

Which means that, once a player has submitted to his annual test for recreational drugs, he can use them with impunity, as long as he engages in no behavior that would place him in the program, such as being arrested for marijuana possession or having a joint fall out of his backpack during a visit to the league office. (In contrast, testing for PEDs happens on a random basis throughout the year, with one confirmed positive resulting in a four-game suspension.)

There’s no evidence that Hernandez was smoking marijuana or taking any other drugs while playing for the Patriots. Still, that’s currently the least of his and their problems.

Volin also reports the team had no concerns with Hernandez as a player. ”He showed up to meetings and practices on time, practiced hard, stayed in shape, was very coachable, and starred on the field, scoring 18 touchdowns in three seasons,” Volin writes, citing an unnamed team source.

The only issue, and ultimately it may have been a big one, came from Hernandez’s reluctance to sever ties with his friends in Connecticut. Per Volin, Hernandez would “tune out and occasionally become angry” when a coach or other team employee tried to raise the issue with him.

That makes the decision to sign Hernandez to a $40 million deal in 2012 with a $12.5 million signing bonus even more surprising. It’s one thing to take a fourth-round flier on a first-round talent. But the Pats decided after only two seasons to tie the knot with Hernandez, despite his reluctance to break from folks whom the Patriots apparently believed could get Hernandez in to trouble.

The contact negotiations provided a perfect opportunity to draw bright lines regarding the things Hernandez can and can’t do going forward. The Patriots routinely dictate terms to players and agents; when it comes to free agency, for example, agents and players know that they can pretty much nothing without angering (and possibly alienating) Bill Belichick and company.

At a minimum, Hernandez’s contract could have been constructed to provide better (any) protections for the team, with roster bonuses replacing an eight-figure lump sum that Hernandez earned once he signed the deal. While there remains no plausible or logical way to project murder from Hernandez’s history, the Patriots’ failure to properly guard against a worst-case scenario is stunning, given that they at least had reason to be concerned that something could happen with Hernandez.

Otherwise, they wouldn’t have periodically asked him to quit hanging around with his friends in Connecticut.
