Defensive back Tony Carter, who was on the practice squad last season, has been informed that the Patriots will be releasing him, according to Denver-Fox31 reporter Josina Anderson.

He was signed to the 53-man roster on Dec .18.

Mankins to sign tender, report to camp on time

One of the big questions facing the Patriots at the start of training camp was whether or not stellar guard Logan Mankins would report to training camp on time and sign his franchise tender delay his arrival to the team in protest, as he did last year.

Apparently, that won't be a problem.

Mankins will sign his tender and report to camp on time, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Last year, as one of over 200 fourth- and fifth-year NFL players who lost out on the opportunity to be unrestricted free agents due to the rules of the uncapped season, Mankins was given a restricted free agent tender, which was reduced when he didn't sign it by a June deadline.

He did not report to Gillette until the first week of November, saying "it was time" to return to the team, and was immediately re-inserted into the starting lineup.

Mankins' franchise number is over $10 million and it would benefit the team to finally agree to a long-term deal with the seventh-year player, both for the salary cap relief it could provide and the relief it would provide Tom Brady knowing Mankins will be protecting him for a few more years.

Patriots to release Tully Banta-Cain

FOXBOROUGH -- Linebacker Tully Banta-Cain is going to be released by the Patriots on Thursday Friday.

Update (1:40 p.m.): Banta-Cain has confirmed the news, first reported by ESPN, with a text to Shalise Manza Young reading "it was a fun ride."

Over the last two seasons, Banta-Cain recorded 15 tackles for New England in his second go-round with the team after a two-year stay with the 49ers. He signed a contract extension after the 2009 season and his cap hit including bonuses for the coming season was to be $4.5 million. According to the accurate website patscap.com, the team saves nearly $2 million by releasing him.

Banta-Cain had surgery four days ago to repair an abdominal strain from an injury which had been affecting him since last season. Patriots team doctors knew about the injury and gave him a plan to deal with it during the lockout. At one point over the past few months, a source said the injury felt "fine," but as Banta-Cain began to ramp up workouts about a month ago, the problem flared up.

We are working to find out if this is a situation in which Banta-Cain will be outright released (cuts aren't official until Friday at 4 p.m.) or if he might be cut and brought back at a lower salary.

The front-runner: New England is going to be good as long as Tom Brady is upright. The defense figures to be better with so many young players gaining crucial experience last season. If defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth gets his head right, he could be a nice addition. Wide receiver Chad Ochocinco could post big numbers.

The biggest threat: The Jets' toughness will get through a lot of difficult games and quarterback Mark Sanchez should continue to improve. WR Plaxico Burress was a nice free-agent pickup but expectations shouldn't be too great.

Work to do: Miami got more explosive by acquiring Reggie Bush in a trade. His durability will determine how much he helps. The defense should be good and one of the most physical in the NFL. Quarterback remains an issue. If the Dolphins had faith in Chad Henne, they wouldn't have flirted with Kyle Orton. Buffalo could be a sleeper. The Bills have holes but Chan Gailey gets this team to play hard.

Umenyiora says that in the NFL, contracts are a one-way street: Players are supposed to honor them, but teams aren’t.

“The fact is in the business we are in, if you get injured, or they feel like you underperformed, they cut you without hesitation,” Umenyiora said. “But if you clearly outplay your contract, and ask for something to be done, you’re a bad guy and not a team player. It’s ridiculous.”

Umenyiora also seems bothered by the six-year, $72 million contract the Panthers gave to Charles Johnson.

“How does a guy who had one good year [no disrespect to Charles Johnson] sign a deal and make more than both me and [Justin] Tuck combined?” Umenyiora wrote in the e-mail. “It’s not right.”
